- Teacher of Higher Level English to Leaving Certificate Level in Newtown School, Waterford. (1972 to 2010)
- 1980 – 1996 employed as an Assistant Examiner in History for the State Examinations Commission. Since then he has been an Advising Examiner in History for the State Examinations Commission, both at Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate level.
- For the majority of his teaching career he has been providing educational and career guidance to students in Newtown School, including a substantial number with an international background.
- Since 2002, under the auspices of the Irish Department of Education and Science, he has been providing educational and career guidance to students in five European Schools – Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe (Germany); Alicante (Spain) and Varese(Italy).
- He was South East Coordinator for the Department of Education and Science Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. (1994 -2002)
